World Hypertension & No Tobacco Day

With time deaths associated with tobacco usage is becoming one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced, killing over 8 million people a year around the world. More than 7 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.3 million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use worldwide. Other tobacco products include waterpipe tobacco, cigars, cigarillos, heated tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco, pipe tobacco, bidis and kreteks, and smokeless tobacco products. Smoking causes cancer is labelled kn every package stating the decree of the cancer causing issues including lung cancers. Not just that it can cause cancer in the mouth and nose, throat and voice box, oesophagus, blood cells, liver, stomach, kidney, pancreas, mucinous ovary, ureter, cervix, colon and bladder. Thus it is safe to say that the association between tobacco consumption and oral cancer is well recognised. Tobacco consumption has several different forms. It includes both smoked tobacco in the form of cigarettes, cigars and beedi (a cheap mini-cigar) and smokeless tobacco use through chewing, snuffing, and dipping dissolvable tobacco. Considering all the aforementioned WHO affects of tobacco consumption and celebrating May 31st, World no tobacco day to create awareness about effects of Smoking.

On this day, The department of ENT in association with department of Medicine and PSM has organised a Walkathon in Channapatna on 31st May 2024. The programme starts with march to include Medical students and Staff of various departments from High Court, channapatna to Channaptna Municipal Office from 10am to 11.30am. Small programme in Municipality Office premises by creating awareness about hypertension and effects of tobacco on health of human beings.
